How the Electoral College decides 2028

The president is not chosen by the national popular vote. Each state holds its own election and, in 48 states and D.C., the winner takes all of that state's electors. Maine and Nebraska split theirs by congressional district. Whoever reaches 270 of the 538 electoral votes wins.

That is why a handful of close states matter so much. See the 2028 swing states, the electoral votes for every state, or draw your own prediction.
